Where to buy gluten free (GF) products in Latvia?
When buying products you must search the international symbols like
or text “Gluten free” in Latvian “Nesatur glutēnu” or “Nesatur lipekli”, or “Bez glutēna”.
Gluten-free products are becoming more popular in Latvia because of its growing demand, nevertheless the situation is still far from being decent.
You will find special shelves of gluten free products in supermarkets Maxima XX and XXX (they are bigger) and some Rimi, but not in all – mainly in the biggest ones all over Latvia. Search for Rimi hypermarkets. They sell some GF products of Schär, Ica, Gullon, Rimi Free from, Belvitan. Also shop chain TOP offers some GF products. You must look for the biggest shops as they have a variety of products such as flour, pasta, cookies, sweets, chips (like shop in Ogre). In shops like Elvi, Mego you will also find some GF products from Schär.
“Stockmann” located near the central train station and bus station in Riga have a very wide range of gluten-free products on separate shelves, they are just more expensive.
There are several BIO ECO shops in the centre of Riga like “Livin”, “Dabas Stacija”, “Lavandas” where you can find a wide range of gluten free products. At “Dabas Stacija” you will find mostly everything you need – cereals, bread, flour, vegan GF products, sweets, gums, chips. You can look at their offer at online stores.
We advise you to taste vegetable cakes and profiteroles made here in Latvia by domestic company Diamonds Food Group. Cakes are free from gluten and lactose. Not to be afraid of cross-contamination you should know that this company is making only GF products. Products of gluten free range from bakery “Liepkalni” are also to must taste (salty and sweet cookies), available in their shops and online. They use gluten-free wheat starch as well.
Some pharmacies offer gluten free products, mostly from Schär, for instance “Internetaptieka.lv” is well known for its wide range of Schär products. You can buy products online or on the spot in shop.
In Riga you must visit the only gluten-free bakery in Latvia “Better Bread”. It has several locations in Riga and one closer to the Sea in Jūrmala.
